Jamie N Commons – The Baron (EP)
Continue Reading
I Heart Sharks – Summer
Berlin-based electronic-rock band I Heart Sharks hail from England, New York and Bayern. I also heart sharks: they are my favourite sea-based animal, though Penguins are also pretty amazing. Sadly, that’s where the appreciation for this band ends, and the onset of dread begins. On second track ‘Monogamy’, the backing vocals ‘ha ha ha wooo’ are nearly as aggravating as the main vocals, but at least there’s an irony in the lyrical bridge ‘make it stop, make it stop, make it stop‘. This record is full of silly, inadvisable melodies and is cringeworthy from start to finish. The record sounds arrogant … Continue Reading
The Bony King Of Nowhere – Eleonore
With a name that (arguments on hold here) references British superpower act Radiohead’s alternative title for ‘There There’ (found on their LP ‘Hail To The Thief), you would expect perhaps a certain amount of greatness in this record from Ghent based singer-songwriter Bram Vanparys. Unfortunately, this ‘ghostly vocal’, simple songwriting and lines such as ‘all my loved ones are here‘ or ‘today i leave it all behind me’…marks this as a tired, predictable, often extremely boring example of where this type of music is going nowadays. With fantastic examples in this … Continue Reading
Fawn Spots – Hair Play EP
Fawn Spots are a two piece noise punk outfit hailing from the small town of York. They are possibly one of the loudest and most fun bands I have seen play live in recent years. My first encounter with Fawn Spots happened when I travelled to York to see Times New Viking and these lads were supporting. After missing our train back to Newcastle, we decided to venture into town with the two and they happen to be to of the nicest guys. Since then we have had numerous encounters, whether it be a random encounter on a metro train in Barcelona at 5am or on their visit to Newcastle where we scoured the streets in search of the legendary Parmo! What I’m trying to say, basically, is that these two York gentlemen have a certain fun and liveliness about them, which they display perfectly in their music.
The influences are obvious; No Age, Husker Du, Black Flag, … Continue Reading
M83 – Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.
This release marks their first in over 3 years since ‘Saturdays=Youth’, which was an album focused on song structure and form, inspired by band mastermind Anthony Gonzalez ‘being a teenager in the 80′s’. ’Shoegaze’ is always a term I’m a little wary of (and don’t get me started on ‘post-rock’), but it seems of all bands to attract this rather tired title, M83 are amongst the most deserving. However, they do throw off some of these shackles in this latest release. At times, it’s an ‘Indie-pop gone epic’ record that swells and breaks with real beauty. It’s a dream album, and the journey dips and curves just like your most expansive dreams.
From the whispered vocal, warm bass and synth sounds to kick things off on ‘Intro’ (featuring … Continue Reading
Nev Clay – “Pearshaped” (Digital Re-Release)
This week Nev Clay uploaded and published his excellent album ‘Pearshaped’ to his Bandcamp site thus making it available to the wider world. Facebook and Twitter went nuts. Just about all of the local musicians, music lovers & music journalists I know, and a few I don’t, instantly began to publish it to their news feeds, their band accounts and blogs. No surprise, judging by the high level of respect rightfully given to Nev from his contemporaries & listeners.
I’ve known Nev now for just over a year, I wouldn’t be so presumptive to call myself his contemporary; he is in a different league, but being a North East based Singer-Songwriter myself, Nev’s music was like my apprenticeship. I’ve been listening to Nev’s songs and enjoying them immensely now for a number of years, it sounds cliché but every one of his songs gets better with each listen.
‘Pearshaped’ is a collection of songs written and recorded … Continue Reading
I Build Collapsible Mountains – The Spectator & The Act
Wall Of Sound und ausufernde Soundlandschaften sucht man … Continue Reading
The Good Morning Diary – The Good Morning Diary (EP)
Continue Reading
Bloodgroup – Dry Land
From Iceland, Reykjavik. A blend of electronica, strings and pop, with strings recorded and mixed by the excellent Ólafur Arnalds. It’s difficult not to get excited knowing all of the above.
Releasing what the Icelandic press say is ‘one of the very best albums of 2009′ – now for their wider audience – ‘Dry Land’ is a carefully and intricately produced second LP in the main, following 2007′s ‘Sticky Situation’. The band have grown from playing East-Iceland electronica shows in ‘run-down houses’ (hard to imagine in the picturesque splendour created by Icelandic darlings Sigur Rós) to ‘something much bigger’, playing festivals like SXSW in … Continue Reading
Edda Magnason – Goods
Continue Reading
