Eight Legs + Sunday Chocolate Club, AMP, Münster, 17. April 2010
Unfassbar, ganze fünf Jahre ist es bereits her, dass wir den Sunday Chocolate Club das erste und das letzte Mal live gesehen haben. Damals noch als Quartett im Vorprogramm des wunderbaren Gus Black im ebenfalls wunderbaren Gleis 22. Aber so ist das wohl mit lokalen Bands, manchmal kreuzen sich die Wege doch ziemlich selten. Mittlerweile spielte die Band aus Münster und Bielefeld natürlich einige Konzerte in Münster und hat mit Klubgrün noch ein Nebenprojekt gegründet, dass wir ebenfalls mehr als empfehlen können. Fünf Jahre nachdem wir den sonntäglichen Schokoladenverein also das letzte Mal gesehen haben, hatten wir nun Gelegenheit, im Münsteraner AMP einmal zu sehen, wie sich die Band in der Zwischenzeit entwickelt hat. Natürlich sollten sie wieder den Support geben, 
dieses Mal für die deutlich jüngeren Eight Legs.
Das sollte auch das Publikum deutlich jünger halten, so dass wohl die wenigsten, die an diesem Abend im AMP waren Sunday Chocolate Club kannten, von Gus Black ganz zu schweigen. Das führte zu verhaltener Begeisterung der Anwesenden zu Beginn des Sets, in dessen Verlauf aber immer mehr, der auf die Eight Legs wartenden Konzertbesucher sich vom zackigen Indie-Rock des Sunday Chocolate Club begeistern ließen. Bei einigen wurde aus zunächst zurück haltendem Mitwippen sogar ein ausgelassenes Tanzen. Die Laune der Band stieg in gleichem Maße, wie die Begeisterung der Besucher. Kein Wunder eigentlich, dürfte doch die Mischung aus Indie- und Brit-Rock, irgendwo zwischen den Kaiser Chiefs, The Futureheads, Pulp und The Smiths genau nach dem Geschmack der heutigen Indie-Szene sein. Da war es natürlich um so großartiger, dass das Trio nach knapp 30 Minuten Set vom Publikum noch einmal für eine Zugabe auf die Bühne zurück gefordert wurden, die sie natürlich auch wahr genommen haben.
Die anschließende Umbaupause dauerte länger als erwartet, der Eight Legs Tourmanager ließ sich Zeit, die Mikros auszurichten, die Gitarren aufzubauen, das Drum-Kit umzubauen, Bier bereit zu stellen und die Set-Lists auszulegen. In der Zwischenzeit wurde auch der seitliche Vorhang der Bühne geöffnet, damit auch alle Anwesenden etwas von der Bühne sehen konnten. Immer ein gutes Zeichen, denn das bedeutet natürlich gute Besucherzahlen, für die die Eight Legs bei ihren Besuchen im AMP eigentlich auch immer sorgen.
Irgendwann betraten die vier Eight Legs dann auch endlich die Bühne und sorgten beim Publikum, wie auch bei ihren bisherigen Besuchen im AMP wieder für ausgelassene Tanzstimmung. Dabei waren es vor allem wieder die Songs des Debüts “Searching For The Simple Life”, die für die größte Begeisterung sorgten. Die Eight Legs haben wir zwar schon deutlich ausgelassener und Bewegungsfreudiger erlebt, aber von einfach runter gespielt war das auch weit entfernt und für gute Samstagabend-Stimmung reichte das allemal. Mit noch ein bisschen mehr Jubel, als beim Sunday Chocolate Club wurden die Eight Legs dann nach ihrem Set in die AMP Party-Nacht entlassen, bei der sie sich dann auch wieder einmal am DJ-Pult verdingt haben. Auch das, ein Ritual, das sie bei keinem Besuch im AMP auslassen.

Eight Legs – Tour-Diary Pt. 7 “in true rock and roll style had an early night”
Finalstimmung im Eight Legs Tour-Diary. Nur noch vier Termine sind übrig, darunter nur noch Termine im Süden, nach denen sich die Jungs am Wochenende auf die lange Heimfahrt machen dürfen. Aber erst einmal zu den neuesten Erlebnissen, dieses Mal von Jack Garside:
Another day on the road. Today starts with the drive from Munster to Berlin.
After being reunited with 2/3 of The Shutes who look a hell of a lot better than when we left them, we headed over to a competition winners house. The competition he won earns him the pleasure of having us over to play in his living room. After being told that we were playing at a 14 year olds house we were slightly surprised to roll up to a fella named Christian (aged 25) and his flat full of friends and fans.
After an interesting but all together great house gig we headed over to White Trash for some grub and then in true rock and roll style had an early night.
Today we cruised over to Leipzig for an acoustic gig, should be a banger.

Eight Legs – Tour-Diary Pt. 6 “no run-ins with the police this time around”
Gestern spielten die Eight Legs ihr mittlerweile viertes Konzert in Münster. Es war wieder einmal voll und eine gute Show, mehr dazu in Kürze hier. Aber erst einmal melden sich die Eight Legs selbst zu Wort, nämlich mit ihrem sechsten Tour-Diary Eintrag. Los geht’s mit einer kleinen Geschichtsstunde. Es kann ja auch nicht immer um’s Saufen gehen. Geschrieben hat übrigens Sam.
Dresden:
During WWII, the Allied Forces destroyed the city. It was completely flattened. What was once one of Europe’s leading cities of art, architecture and culture became nothing more than a smoldering blanket of rubble. According to wikipedia, civilian deaths after the bombings are currently believed to be “around 24,000 and 40,000″ It is argued that the city posed no real industrial or military threat to the allied forces. Some people claim that the bombings were a war crime. Others claim that the attacks were strategically justified. Some historians argue that the city was bombed to stop the Russians from gaining a city of immense beauty and culture or that the brutality of the attacks were simply a demonstration of how far the allied forces were willing to go to emerge victorious.
Today – excluding a few glorious buildings near the river – the city seems to be a concrete monument to its former glory.

Berlin:
This was a great show. We returned to the Bang Bang club, a familiar venue to us, and played to a large, enthusiastic crowd in a city that we love. Customary post gig drinks ensued at 8mm into the small hours.
Prior to the Berlin gig we played an acoustic set at the Ramones museum and had an interview at the radio station Motor FM.
A Cloud Of Volcanic Ash:
At this juncture, we were supposed to bid farewell to The Shutes. Tired and disheveled, they left for the airport singing “take me back to dear old blightey”. Alas, their journey home was not to be, owing to the eruption of a volcano in Iceland and the resulting cloud of dust belched south over Europe, which has grounded planes at airports almost everywhere.
As you are surely aware this event has caused chaos more potent than the disruption to flights following 9/11. However, if one good thing can come of this then it is that The Shutes will now complete the rest of the tour with us. So you lucky people who are still to see an Eight Legs gig, may also get to see the Shutes.
Augsburg:
Following a heavy night in Berlin, we left early to make time for the six hour drive into Bavaria. We were making good time until we were stopped and questioned by a pair of stern police officers, then searched and questioned some more. This happens to us frequently in the south so we have become somewhat desensitized to their harassment. It is nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
Once again, the gig that night was brilliant.
Munster:
Another early start the following day and another six hour drive this time headed north west to Munster. Thankfully, we had no run-ins with the police this time around. This is the fourth time we have played in Munster, as always we had a great show.

Beinahe drei Tage musstet ihr nun schon ohne Update von der Tour der Eight Legs auskommen. Da wird es natürlich wieder Zeit, also weiter geht’s dann jetzt mit Teil 5 des Dairy:
THEM DERN’S
I think the last time we spoke was just before the show in Frankfurt. The gig was great but the evening was somewhat ruined by tour manager, ‘Big Willy Mathews’ keeping everybody awake all night with his fucking snoring!
Post Frankfurt was a day off in Dresden. This was supposed to be a chilled one with an evening of rest and relaxation……However, by 6pm we were bored as bastards so we decided to invest in a selection of eastern europes finest red wine, scotlands cheapest scotch and Dresdens deadliest tramp beer. Needless to say, things went downhill from there. After the introduction of a brand spanking new drinking game ‘THEM DERN’S’ (nice one Shutes) we discovered that copious amounts of Macedonian Merlot and Kosovan Claret does strange things to the human body/mind. Mike Shutes was talking to goasts, Rob Shutes turned into a dying feline and Dubbs Eightlegs did a textbook sick. There were some sore heads in the morning.

Und weiter geht’s mit der Tour der Eight Legs. Nun kurz vor ihrem Konzert in Frankfurt wurde es auch wieder Zeit für den nächsten Teil des Tour-Diary. Viel Spaß:
The Cologne craic and Germany thrash England 18 – 8 in the Football….
After a bit of a quiet night (in terms of alcohol consumption) in Paderborn (lovely place) we arrived in Cologne for our show at Gebaude 9. An early start meant we had time for a spot of football… and since it was such a sunny day (Vitamin D mother fuckers…) we set out in search of a park. After being ushered away form several spots we bumped into a group of fellas who in fact did not want our phones and wallets (as first thought) but challenged us to a game. I’d like to lie and say it was close… but it definitely wasn’t… we got smashed… However we can take solace in the fact that England 1st term will win the world cup, im certain.
The gig that evening was an absolute banger. Great crowd – The Shutes and birthday boy (and ex-eight leg) Lee Wesley made a brief appearence during the set. This was followed by our signature 1 ipod DJ set.
I should also point out the football results in England were shite for all of us that day apart from our big skunk mag matthews….
Day off on Sunday. We put on a surprise acoustic show with The Shutes at Stereo Wonderland who stole the show. Big up thanks and respect to Steini and Martin at Stereo Wonderland for the party, the booze, the beds and breakfast!

Hello ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the third installment of the Eight Legs tour blog.
Day 3 of the tour and we are currently on route to Paderborn with the stinky showerless Shutes. After Rob getting arrested Chris in his attempt to upstage him failed, resulting in a broken toe from a heated debate. Jack W managed to pull the first sick on the tour this morning with his head out of the window of the Van.
Last nights show in Heidelberg apart from being the hottest show in history was also a corker. With copious amounts of Jager and some indie disco it was a fun night all round. Messy dressing room apart.

Eight Legs – Tour-Diary Pt. 2 “This little Piggy went to market. This little Piggy had a field day.”
Und weiter geht’s mit dem Tagebuch der Eight Legs. Die Jungs haben gestern noch die Reise nach Stuttgart beendet. Dort feierten sie den Auftakt der Deutschland-Tour und haben direkt wieder einiges erlebt, das sie euch sogleich berichten möchten. Heute geschrieben von Sänger Sam Jolly. Viel Spaß:
“This little Piggy went to market. This little Piggy had a field day. German Police. Red mist. Rob Potter: Criminal.
They were on us like a rash. Like flies ’round shit. Looking back at the ambush, it is the speed and efficiency of their brutality that astounds me. There was no warning; the snarling German shepherd was hanging off my forearm before I had chance to realise what was happening.
We were in Stuttgart and had been drinking heavily after the first gig of our tour. We had watched a great show by The Shutes and were still buzzing from our own performance. Naturally, we all felt like having a few drinks. We left the venue, had a drunken bike ride and then went looking for the next whiskey bar.
And that is when they hit us. Ten angry police officers, armed and offended by our presence, plus one big, angry dog. The pigs were in no mood to talk, they didn’t want to here what we had to say for ourselves. It seems that all they really wanted to do was bust some British skulls. The mix of beer, vodka, adrenaline and anger makes my recollection of the whole affair somewhat hazy. But I remember being angry… FUCKING ANGRY. Irate, incensed, outraged, seething at their improper use of violence. As soon as they had pulled the dog off my arm they slapped a pair of cuffs on me. I can only assume that they thought their cold brand of emotionless savagery would placate me. It just made me more indignant.
My friends were lined up like terror suspects, faces to the wall, hands visible. Their questions answered only with the sharp blow of the telescopic baton, wielded by the over zealous sergeant. Meanwhile, two officers had me around the corner, pressed against a kebab shop window. They pushed my face into the glass if I had the audacity to turn and face them or ask them why we were being attacked. A third officer stood with the obedient, brainwashed dog, ready to unleash the animal to attack at the first excuse. I thought to myself, that out of all of the whole bunch of pigs, the dog had the closest thing to a glint of humanity in his eyes.
Eventually they decided that they had their man. They picked him out of the lineup at random. He was Rob Potter: bassist to The Shutes – criminal to the German injustice system. He had allegedly smashed the window of an advertising board. They stuck him in the van and took him down to the station where he was given garbled German confessions to sign and shown photos of the crime scene. Importantly though, they had no evidence linking him to the crime. Why? Because he didn’t do it.
I thought that British police were bad but this was something else.
Injustice aside, we had a great time in Stuttgart. It is a beautiful city. Rob was released without charge and vengeance will have to be left to the gods. We can only hope that karma catches up with aforementioned police officers and deals them the cruelest retribution.

Eight Legs – Tour-Diary Pt. 1 “a can of red bull bigger than the Eiffel Tower”
Wie “Eight Legs Tour-Diary”? Berechtigte Frage. Eigentlich wollten wir euch noch angekündigt haben, dass die vier Eight Legs uns während ihrer gesamten Europa-Tour mit kleinen Tagebuch-Einträgen auf dem Laufenden halten. Eigentlich, aber da sind sie uns nun mit ihrem allerersten Eintrag zuvor gekommen. Deshalb nun pünktlich zum Start der Deutschland-Tour, heute in Stuttgart, die Ankündigung und der Start in das Tour-Diary in einem. Also, die Eight Legs sind auf Tour und berichten euch hier in kleinen Einträgen von ihren Erlebnissen. Den Anfang macht Adam, also los geht’s:

Today is day one and we are all fresh as daisys. We are currently in Luxembourg on route to Stuttgart for the first show. Highlights of today included Drinking a beer with our first Mcdonalds of the tour (massive novelty), getting lost in rural France causing us to nearly running out of petrol and tour manager ‘Big Willy Matthews’ finding a can of red bull bigger than the Eiffel Tower…..

Wir präsentieren: Eight Legs – auf Tour im April
Seit ihrem letzten Abstecher auf deutsche Bühnen haben die Eight Legs wieder etwas mehr als ein Jahr ins Land ziehen lassen. In dieser Zeit waren sie natürlich nicht untätig, sondern spielten sechs neue Songs für ihre am 2. April erscheinende EP “Best Of Me” ein. Davon gibt es nun auch bereits den Song “Over & Over” hier zum Gratis-Download. Ein paar Tage nach dem EP-Release machen sich die acht Beine dann auch auf große Tour durch die DACH-Region. Vorab spielen die Eight Legs übrigens auch schon auf der Snowhite Stage Play Winter Festival in Hamburg, zusammen mit Zoot Woman, The Sounds und Popular Damage.
