Leeds Festival, August 26th to 28th

I had the pleasure of attending LEEDS FESTIVAL 2011 for the third year. This yearly rock festival is world-famous for it’s strong line-up, huge crowds and variety. Headlining this time around were Muse, My Chemical Romance and Pulp.

Arriving after a monsoon on Friday having missed a raft of bands, INTERPOL were playing some songs in the remaining rain. A fitting setting. As moody and gloomy as they have been branded, there is a light inside of Interpol that is present on their new self-titled album. In the torrential rain of Leeds they pounded through some of the favourites from debut LP ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’, playing ‘Obstacle 1′ to close their set. They were full of energy and impressively entertained the rain-soaked crowds. Someone even held up a sign saying ‘I came all the way from Africa to see you’. E For Explosion – Reinventing the Heartbeat

Als zu Beginn des Jahrzehnts eine kleinere Emo-Welle durch die USA schwappte wollte auch Universal / Interscope dabei sein und verpflichte das Duo JamisonParker. Der Erfolg bleib leider aus und so trennten sich 2005 die Wege von Jamison Covington und Parker Cave. Während Cave jetzt den Drummer bei Say Anything spielt, zog Covington vor lieber ein Soloprojekt zu starten und gründete E For Explosion. Die Marschrichtung bei ihm, immer noch Emo. Allerdings nicht das, was man heute Emo nennen würde, eher das, was laut Jimmy Eat World Emo war, als sie “Clarity” veröffentlichten.

Mit besagtem Jimmy Eat World Album ist auch schon die wichtigste Referenz für das E For Explosion Debüt “Reinventing The Heartbeat” genannt. Der Sound von “Clarity” scheint Covington so beeinflusst zu haben, dass man sich beim Hören stellenweise fast nicht sicher ist, welches Album man gerade hört. Dennoch bewahrt sich Covington auf den weitesten Teilen des Album seine Eigenständigkeit. Unter seine verträumten Popsongs mischt er noch einige Shoegazeelemente im Stile von My Bloody Valentine und erzeugt auf diese Weise sanfte Arrangements, über denen seine Stimme schwebt. Das Endprodukt siedelt irgendwo zwischen Dreampop und Shoegaze, mit einem glatten orchestralen Sound, der stellenweise fast schon kitschig und schmalzig wirkt, aber kurz vor dem Abdriften doch noch die Kurve kriegt und sich zu atmosphärischen Popsongs entwickelt. Dreamgaze also auf amerikanisch.
